GRANDVILLE, Mich. (AP) — A Republican National Committee member being criticized by the GOP and Democrats alike for making anti-gay remarks will skip this week’s RNC meeting in Washington.

In a statement, Dave Agema says his “liberal critics” would use his attendance at the meeting as an excuse “for a drawn-out fight between liberals and conservatives within the party.”

The 64-year-old ex-state representative from Grandville says he’s sending a proxy.

The Detroit Free Press says ex-GOP National Committeeman Chuck Yob will attend in Agema’s place.

Agema has attacked same-sex marriage and accuses gays of seeking free health care out of fear of AIDS.

In addition to a number of leading Democrats, several Republican members of Michigan’s congressional delegation have called on Agema to resign in light of the anti-gay comments.
