Mel Trotter Emergency Weather Plan for Homeless

Due to the continuing severe weather, Mel Trotter Ministries has extended their Emergency Weather Plan to ensure a safe shelter for homeless men, women and children.

Among Mel Trotter Ministries top priorities is to keep people safe from extreme weather. Their goal is to be proactive rather than reactive; therefore they are implementing an Emergency Weather Plan in anticipation for bitterly cold temperatures throughout the next several days.

The Emergency Weather Plan is put into effect when temperatures go in to single digits. When those harsh cold days are here, Mel Trotter’s DayCenter stays open all day. In the DayCenter, individuals may get a warm drink, do laundry, use the internet and seek shelter from the elements. From the DayCenter, all guests are invited to stay in the Emergency Shelter for a hot dinner, and a warm bed to sleep in overnight. Special precautions have been taken to secure extra mattresses for overflow sleeping arrangements.

During those days and nights when the Emergency Weather Plan is enforced, Mel Trotter accepts all homeless men, women and children that need shelter, even those that have previously been placed on a barred list. To keep the location safe and secure, extra security will be brought in to the facility.

The Mission is in need of blankets, twin-sized sheets, socks, and pillow cases. For drop off locations or to make a monetary donation, visit our website at, or call 616-454-8249 for more information.
