GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — For the first time in nearly three weeks Thursday , the West Michigan Whitecaps had their minds off the fire that destroyed part of their stadium and back on baseball.

The 20th annual Whitecaps Winter Banquet was held at DeVos Place in downtown Grand Rapids.

The event raised more than $58,000 and boasted its second-largest crowd ever with more than 900 tickets were sold.

Attendees were treated to more than the usual raffles and auctions: 20 Detroit Tigers were on hand, including Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer.

Scherzer is in the last year of his current deal with the Tigers and said he hopes to remain in Detroit for a long time.
