Baby burns to death; couple charged

generic jail

DETROIT (AP) — Prosecutors have charged a man and woman with murder in the burning death of a 1-year-old boy. The Detroit couple say they left the infant in a stroller covered by a blanket next to a space heater.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy says that 22-year-old Sandford McQueen and 23-year-old Karen M. Geletzke are charged with second-degree murder and child abuse. Detroit police say they were arraigned Sunday and ordered held without bond until a probable-cause hearing Feb. 16.

Authorities haven’t released the name of the baby, who died Wednesday.

Police say the baby’s mother left him in the care of McQueen and Geletzke. It’s unknown if the suspects have lawyers.
