GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder has created a special office designed to attract legal immigrants to the state and has named the office’s first director.

Snyder told a Michigan Press Association luncheon in Grand Rapids Friday that Bing Goei will head the Michigan Office for New Americans. The Indonesian man came to the U.S. in 1960, settled in Grand Rapids and owns one of the biggest flower businesses in the state.

Snyder announced the immigration office in his recent State of the State address. He publicly signed an executive order Friday creating the office.

As part of his emphasis on immigration, the Republican governor recently asked the federal government to set aside thousands of work visas for Detroit in a bid to revive the decaying city by attracting talented immigrants.
