BLENDON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A couple awoke to the sounds of their house on fire early Sunday.
The fire was reported at 12:01 a.m. at 9477 Port Sheldon St. in Blendon Township, near Zeeland.
The two residents were sleeping at the time of the fire. They heard the crackling of the fire, which woke them, said Blendon Township Fire Chief Kurt Gernaat. The residents said they heard the fire before they smelled smoke or felt heat.
The house was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived at the scene.
Firefighters were able to isolate the fire damage to one room, but other areas of the home sustained extensive smoke and water damage.
Firefighters from Blendon and Olive townships, as well as Zeeland, responded and were at the scene for about three hours.
There were two children living in the home, but they were away for the evening when the fire sparked, Gernaat said.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
