Grand Rapids brothers are in Sochi

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) The 2014 Winter Games are just days away, and 24 Hour News 8 Sports Director Jack Doles is in Sochi, Russia, getting ready to cover all the action.

He caught up with two Grand Rapids natives who are not competing, but do have big hopes tied to the Games. Four years ago, Mike Kooreman coached the U.S. speed skating team. This year, his brother Matt is leading the team. Mike Kooreman is in Sochi beside him. His fiancé, Jessica Smith, is one of the top skaters on the U.S. women’s short track team.

Jack will continue to bring us reports from Russia as the Games get under way. The 2014 Olympics start on Thursday, February 6, 2014. On Friday, February 7, tune in to our special “Olympic Hopes, Gold Dreams.” We’ll introduce you to the Michigan athletes who are going for the gold. That’s at 7 p.m. on WOOD TV8. Then you can watch the opening ceremony at 8 p.m.
