GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A Sparta man whose newborn son sustained 19 bone fractures will spend at least three and half years in prison.
David Steiger was sentenced to three and a half to 10 years in prison.
His son was 20 days old when he was first taken to the hospital in July 2013 because he would not stop crying. Doctors at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital determined he had sustained 19 fractures. Steiger was then arrested and charged.
According to court documents, 19-year-old Steiger told police he remembered pushing the baby’s legs until he heard a pop. Documents also said Steiger admitted his son fell off a couch while in his care.
As far as the rest of the injuries, Steiger apparently said he might have caused them, but didn’t remember because he had blacked out.
Steiger pleaded no contest in January to first-degree child abuse.
