891 crashes in MSP 5th District in January

COLDWATER, Mich. (WOOD) – Troopers from the Michigan State Police 5th District responded to 891 crashes in the snowy month of January.

The 5th District comprises of Allegan, Barry, Berrien, Branch, Calhoun, Cass, Kalamazoo, St. Joseph, and Van Buren counties.

Of the total number of incidents, 66 were rollovers, 291 vehicles (42 semi-trucks) were towed, and 863 vehicles needed assistance.

In one particular incident, on Jan. 27, 16 semi-trucks and several passenger vehicles were involved in crashes on a four-mile stretch of I-94 near Hartford in Van Buren County. Portions of the highway were closed for up to six hours while the wreckage was removed.

Police remind drivers to always use extreme caution when traveling on snow- and ice-covered roads.
