PORTAGE, Mich. (WOOD) — Eighty-four people will lose their jobs when a drug development lab in Portage closes later this year.
Charles River Laboratories notified the state Thursday that it will close the facility in the 9800 block of Shaver Road by the fall.
In a statement, the company said the closure reflects continuing consolidation in the biopharmaceutical industry.
A company spokesperson told 24 Hour News 8 in an email that it will provide affected employees with career counseling via an outside professional services provider.
The full statement from CEO James Foster:
“This decision reflects a challenging marketplace for our research model production business. The continuing consolidation of the biopharmaceutical industry and the global constraints on funding for biomedical research have caused softened demand for our research models. As a result, to enhance the efficiency of our operations, we are closing operations at our Michigan facility. We understand this is a difficult economic environment and plan to support our Portage employees during this time.”
