GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The collapse of a Grand Rapids garage that damaged several vehicles is being blamed on snow by the owner.
The collapse happened shortly before 1 p.m. Thursday in the 900 block of Wealthy Street SE near Diamond Avenue. Witnesses reported a cracking sound and a cloud of snow as the 4,000-square-foot garage collapsed. No one was hurt.
Jeradon Mura’s Honda was among the several vehicles damaged. When the roof caved in, cinder block walls fell onto her car and four others parked outside the garage.
Mura took the incident in stride: “It’s Michigan. It’s winter. It happens.”
At least three more cars inside the garage — one a classic Jaguar — were damaged.
The garage belongs to well-known developer Guy Bazzani, who has renovated a number of buildings in the area, including the office building in front of the garage.
He says the garage was built in the 1920s or 30s. When renovating the office building, he said, crews spent some time reinforcing the garage, too.
“Over the years there was large bay doors cut into it and we blocked those up and so it was structurally stronger than it had been for years. But apparently it couldn’t take the snow load,” he said.
In recent weeks, there have been several roof collapses at West Michigan businesses related to snow. Among them were a Noordyk Business Equipment pole barn in Walker, the West Michigan Tourist Association Offices in Grand Rapids, a Lacks Enterprises facility in Kentwood, The Stow Company in Holland Township, and a Haworth facility in Saugatuck.
