GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A Jenison man was killed Monday when a pickup truck rolled over on I-196 in Grand Rapids.

The wreck happened near Lane Avenue just before 4:30 p.m., according to a release from Michigan State Police. Michael Dietzal was driving his Ford pickup truck east when he swerved. The truck hit the median and the snow bank along it, which caused it to roll, MSP said.

Dietzal, 52, of Jenison was pronounced dead at the scene.

His passenger, a 40-year-old Grand Rapids woman, was taken to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

Police on the scene told 24 Hour News 8 that both were wearing their seat belts. They say the truck was an older model that was not equipped with air bag, which may have contributed to the fatality.

Witnesses said the vehicle’s movement was “erratic” just before the crash.

One lane of eastbound I-196 was shut down for more than three hours, but reopened around 7:45 p.m.
