Teen shot in downtown GR, 1 in custody

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) – A juvenile was shot in downtown Grand Rapids Monday afternoon, and police say they have a suspect in custody.

It happened around 1:30 p.m. outside of the Weston Apartments on Weston Street SW between Division and Commerce avenues.

A male believed to be 15 or 16 was shot once in the lower stomach area and taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police say.

The Grand Rapids Police Department says it detained and was interviewing one person who is being called a suspect. GRPD has also confiscated a vehicle believed to have been involved in the shooting.

Police were still searching for a gun Monday afternoon. Just before 4:20 p.m., officers entered Weston Apartments to look for it.

A witness who watched the shooting from a nearby office told 24 Hour News 8 he saw the victim return fire.

It is not yet clear if or how the suspect and shooter are connected, or whether they are connected to the apartment building.
