DETROIT (AP) — A firefighter has been hurt while battling a blaze in an abandoned commercial building on Detroit’s east side.

Battalion Chief Richard Wright says the firefighter fell at least 10 feet from an aerial lift to ground after being hit by flying bricks.

His condition and extent of his injuries was not immediately available.

Wright says the six-story building has been burning for about a week and the department’s strategy is to spray water on it whenever possible.

No firefighters ever were inside the massive structure.

Flames could be seen from multiple areas inside the building and thick, black smoke was visible from several miles away.
