2 charged in Kzoo attempted arson

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Two people have been charged after police said they caught them trying to set a home on fire.

Officers were tipped off that Elvis Patterson, 56, of Kalamazoo was planning to set a home on fire in the 1300 block of North Park Street in Kalamazoo Thursday morning.

Around 3 a.m., officers caught up with Patterson, and found him inside the home.

Police also arrested a second suspect in the case, 69-year-old Lola Atkinson of Oshtemo Township.

According to the Kalamazoo Gazette, Atkinson is the first vice president of the Kalamazoo Branch NAACP, and the recipient of the 2012 YWCA women of achievement award.

Patterson was arraigned Friday on charges of conspiracy to commit arson and attempted second-degree arson.  Atkinson was arraigned on the same charges.

Both posted bond Friday.
