CROCKERY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) – Two people died and a third was hurt after two vehicles collided Friday afternoon on an Ottawa County road.
The wreck happened around 1 p.m. on Apple Drive near State Road in Crockery Township, just west of Nunica.
An elderly couple were traveling west in a Honda CRV when the driver lost control of the vehicle, regained control, but lost it again. The vehicle crossed the center line and collided with an eastbound pickup truck hauling a trailer, police told 24 Hour News 8 at the scene.
A husband and his wife, 88-year-old Robert George Schmidt and 87-year-old Erika Victoria Schmidt, both from the Nunica area, were in the Honda, both wearing their seat belts. They died at the scene.
The driver and lone occupant in the pickup truck suffered minor injuries.
Police said the road was slushy at the time and may have been a factor in the Honda driver losing control of the vehicle.
