MUSKEGON, Mich. (WOOD) — An employee at a Planet Fitness health club in Muskegon has admitted to recording video of nude customers as they tanned in a tanning bed, according to police.

Officers were called to the business at 2520 Henry Street on Feb. 12 after getting a report that a woman had been secretly videotaped as she tanned.

At the same time, they received a 911 call from a Planet Fitness employee, saying his cell phone had been stolen.

The victim who was videotaped – a 21-year-old woman from Norton Shores – told officers she had gone into a private tanning booth, undressed, and got in to a tanning bed, police said.

When she got out of the tanning bed, she saw a cellphone that was recording video of her, police said.

The victim gave the cellphone to police, and officers met with the owner of the phone, 25-year-old Trent Jannenga of Norton Shores, who is a Planet Fitness employee.

Jannenga told police that his phone had been stolen while he was working. But during further questioning, he admitted that it hadn’t been stolen and he had hidden it in the tanning booth without telling anyone, police said.

Jannenga then told police he had recorded several customers as they tanned, and said he watched the videos and then immediately deleted them, according to police. Detectives weren’t able to find anything that suggested he shared or saved the videos.

Jannenga was arrested Friday morning and lodged in the Muskegon County jail on felony charges of capturing/distributing images of an unclothed person and false report of a felony.

A spokesman for Planet Fitness sent 24 Hour News 8’s this statement: “At Planet Fitness, the safety and privacy of our members is extremely important to us. We are aware of the alleged incident and the employee has been terminated. Our franchise owner is working extremely closely with the local authorities to investigate the matter.”
