GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) – The Meijer State Games of Michigan Winter Games inaugural opening ceremony is Friday night.
The Winter Games will take place Friday to Sunday around the Grand Rapids metro area. It is a multi-sport, Olympic-style event that welcomes athletes regardless of age or ability. Athletes will compete for gold, silver, and bronze medals. The sports lineup includes indoor archery, basketball, indoor BMX, bowling, Fatbike, hockey, racquetball, indoor rowing, ski/snowboard, snowball softball, snowshoe/trail run, speedskating, and wrestling.
The opening ceremony is from 7-8 p.m. Friday at Cannonsburg Ski & Ride Area, 6800 Cannonsburg Road NE in Belmont. The ceremony is free and open to the public. Festivities will include a parade of athletes, a torch light parade (featuring the ski patrol), fireworks, and a “big air” exhibition featuring professional skiers and snowboarders. Merchandise will also be available for purchase.
An athlete check-in will be from 4-6:45 p.m. at the ceremony, and the first 500 athletes to attend will receive giveaways, a commemorative credential, and local restaurant incentives.
A Cannonsburg buy one lift ticket/get one lift ticket free promotion will be available Friday for registered Winter Games participants.
Volunteers are still needed for the Winter Games, and positions include assisting with the opening ceremony, operations, registration, meal delivery, and many more.
