PORTAGE, Mich. (WOOD) – Firefighters had to take a defensive mode against a fire inside a home containing oxygen tanks.
The first Portage Department of Public Safety crews were dispatched around 12:11 a.m. Tuesday to the residence at 1803 Pleasant Dr., south of Centre Avenue, between Lovers Lane and Portage Road, in Portage
They arrived and saw the fire in a corner of the house.
The resident had already escaped safely.
Oxygen tanks inside the home, and the potential danger of an explosion, caused firefighters inside to leave and switch to a defensive mode.
Additional crews from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, Oshtemo Township, South County, Texas Township, Comstock, and off-duty personnel from Portage, arrived at the scene.
The fire was doused about 45 minutes later.
A fireman was injured and transported to a hospital for treatment to non-life-threatening injuries.
A cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
