Barn roof collapses, miniature horse dies

FENNVILLE, Mich. (WOOD) — The roof of a barn collapsed Thursday morning in Fennville, resulting in the death of a miniature horse.

It happened around 10:30 a.m. in the 2800 block of Old Allegan Road.

Four miniature horses were trapped inside the barn when the roof collapsed, according to Lt. Robert Heuer with the Hamilton Fire Department.

Firefighters were able to get all of the horses out, but one of them was so badly injured that it had to be put down by a veterinarian, Heuer said.Fennville barn collapse attached home 022014

Firefighters later shoveled snow off the roof of a modular home — which is attached to the barn — to prevent the roof from collapsing.

That home was not damaged when the roof of the barn collapsed.

Heuer said the barn roof was covered in about three and a half feet of snow when it collapsed.
