GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Grand Rapids police say the suspect in an apparent abduction was already on probation for a previous assault on the alleged victim.
GRPD started investigating late Tuesday after a report of an assault at a residence on Ball Avenue NE near Knapp Street late Tuesday night. An officer at that scene told 24 Hour News 8 police believed there had been an abduction and they were looking for a victim.
The suspect, Valentino Gomez, and victim were found round 12:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Lazy T Motel on Plainfield Avenue north of Lamberton Lake Avenue NE, police said. Gomez was arrested.
The condition of the victim — a 31-year-old woman — was not immediately available.
Gomez and the victim have a domestic relationship and two young children together, GRPD says.
Gomez, 31, has a lengthy criminal history including convictions for assault, and assault with intent to murder. He has also been charged for failing to register as a sex offender, and assaulting a police officer.
He was already on probation for assaulting the same victim in October. In that case, Gomez broke the woman’s jaw. GRPD Lt. Pat Merrill did not immediately know if Gomez’s probation required him not to have any contact with the woman.
GRPD says the woman has refused to cooperate with police in the past and continues to refuse to cooperate. However, GRPD has witnesses, so they are pursing the case anyway.
The precise circumstances leading up to the most recent alleged assault and abduction are not yet known.
