Corrections officer, cadet used steriods

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A Kent County sheriff’s department corrections officer and former cadet have admitted to using illegal steroids.

Michael Carlson and Travis Otten pleaded guilty to misdemeanor use of a non-narcotic controlled substance, Kent County Undersheriff Jon Hess confirmed.

The steroid use was discovered after authorities working another investigation got a tip.

Carlson, 43, has been a corrections officer with Kent County since 1996. He is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation is completed, Hess said.

Otten, 23, has been removed from the cadet program.

Sentencing is scheduled for March 24.
