Door-to-door solicitor arrested on drug charges

DOWAGIAC, Mich. (WOOD) – A man who was soliciting door to door in Dowagiac was arrested on some drug possession charges.

A resident on E. High Street contacted police at 4:40 p.m. Tuesday and said he was just contacted by the suspect claiming to be from Just Energy and wanted to see the resident’s utility bills.

The resident said he told the suspect he was not interested. The suspect walked away from the scene.

Officers located the suspect on Elizabeth Street and discovered he was soliciting in the city without a permit, according to a police news release.

Officers then located a small amount of marijuana in his possession, and arrested him for possession of marijuana.

He was taken to the Cass County Jail where a more thorough search was conducted, and another small quantity of marijuana was located in his possession.

The 36-year-old man from Detroit faces charges of possession of marijuana in Dowagiac, and charges from the Cass County Sheriff’s Department for the marijuana located during the search at the jail.

The Cass County Prosecutor’s Office is reviewing the case.

Dowagiac police continue to investigate the violation of the city ordinance for soliciting without a permit.
