Roof collapse injures 2 at NE Mich. outlet mall

WEST BRANCH, Mich. (AP) — A popular outlet mall has been evacuated after part of a roof over one of its shops collapsed, injuring two customers.

Ogemaw County sheriff’s Deputy Brian Gilbert says a “snow load” on the roof may have “instigated the collapse” Thursday at the Tanger Outlets in West Branch.

Part of the Polo Ralph Lauren Factory Store roof fell in about 2:30 p.m. at the mall, about 140 miles north-northwest of Detroit.

Gilbert says two customers sustained minor injuries and may have been hit by ceiling tiles. He also says the mall will remain closed until engineers “can get in there and figure out what’s going on with the structure, itself.”

A spokesman for Greensboro, N.C., Tanger Outlets says it wants to ensure the mall is safe before reopening it.
