TYRONE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A woman was killed in a crash that shut down a section of 17 Mile Road in central Kent County for about four hours Friday afternoon.

The wreck happened just east of Sparta Avenue in Tyrone Township shortly after 12 p.m.

Sherri Marlene Knapp, 54, of Kent City, was driving east on 17 Mile Road in a 1999 Buick sedan, when she tried to pass another vehicle that was turning left on Sparta Avenue, according to Michigan State Police.

Knapp’s Buick was on the right shoulder of the road as she passed the turning vehicle, MSP said. It then came back onto the road and crossed the centerline, hitting an oncoming vehicle.

Knapp died from her injuries. The driver in the oncoming vehicle that Knapp hit, a 64-year-old person from Kent City, was not injured.

Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, MSP said.

The eastbound and westbound lanes of 17 Mile Road between Sparta Avenue and Afton Avenue reopened around 4 p.m., according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.
