HUDSONVILLE, Mich. (WOOD) — A Hudsonville youth pastor is camping out in sub-zero temperatures this weekend to raise money to send his youth group on a mission trip in Nicaragua.

Fig Vander Molen, the youth pastor at Messiah Christian Reformed Church, has built a structure that has two living spaces for his arctic-like retreat.

The first, in which he will spend most of the weekend, is an old canvas cabin tent that has been furnished with a table and a lantern.

The second space is insulated with snow, and it’s where Vander Molen will sleep.

But this isn’t the first time Vander Molen has camped out in the cold.

“We have done this fundraiser a few times and I have always done it in February, and two years and three years ago it was like, 45, 50, and everyone was giving me a hard time, ‘Oh, you picked the easiest week of the whole winter to do this fundraiser,”’ he said. “This year, when I saw the forecast, I thought, ‘They are never going to let me live it down if I bail,’ so I had to do it.”

Vander Molen said that for $40 raised, he will stay outside for one additional hour.
