Charges after man allegedly shakes 2-month-old

ALLEGAN, Mich. (WOOD) — A Plainwell man is accused of causing his baby daughter brain damage by shaking her.

Anthony Ray McFarlane, 23, was arraigned Monday on one count of first-degree child abuse.

McFarlane’s 2-month-old daughter was admitted to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo in December with multiple injuries, including life-threatening head injuries, according to Michigan State Police.

The baby had been shaken, MSP Det. Sgt. Matthew Doan said, and sustained severe brain damage.

Doan said the child was in McFarlane’s care when the injuries occurred. The child’s mother was at work at the time.

The baby has been released from the hospital and placed in foster care.

McFarlane, a veteran, as also accused of stabbing someone in Otsego in the summer of 2013.
