MUSKEGON, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities say a Fruitport Township couple has been abusing their baby since he was born.
The 5-month-old boy was taken to Helen DeVos Hildren’s Hospital with “life-threatening” head and spinal injuries, Muskegon County Assistant Prosecutor Tim Maat confirmed.
Father Kevin Bastian, 25, was charged with felony first-degree child abuse. The baby’s mother Randee Bastian, 27, is accused of felony second-degree child abuse and misdemeanor lying to police.
The abuse allegedly began the day the baby was born on Sept. 15, 2013. Maat said both parents were complicit to injuring the baby, who was severely injured and malnourished but is expected to survive.
The Bastians are also named in a neglect and abuse case in family court. The Department of Human Services is asking for their parental rights to be terminated.
Kevin Bastian is being held on $80,000 bond and Randee Bastian’s bond was set at $60,000. Both were ordered to have no contact with children if they are released on bond.
If convicted on all counts, Kevin Bastian faces up to life in prison and Randee Bastian could spend 12 years in prison.
