MUSKEGON, Mich. (WOOD) — The baby whose parents are accused of abusing him since birth was not breathing when he arrived at the hospital in December.
Kevin Bastian, 25, was charged with felony first-degree child abuse. Randee Bastian, 27, was charged with felony second-degree child abuse and misdemeanor lying to police.
The Department of Human Services has filed a requests in family court to keep the parents away from 5-month-old Oryn Bastian.
Family court records show Oryn he was taken to Mercy Hospital Dec. 20, 2013 because he wasn’t breathing. Then 3 months old, he had bleeding on the brain and spine, as well as mouth injuries.
The court records say neither parent had an explanation for how the injuries happened.
Randee Bastian allegedly told police she fell while she was holding the baby, but he did not hit his head. Kevin Bastian stated that he played “rough” with the child and “tosses him in the air and catches him.”
Oryn has been placed in foster care, but his maternal grandmother is petitioning the court to let him stay with her. Her attorney told the court she would not allow the parents to see the baby.
The baby’s living arrangements are scheduled to be reviewed during an April hearing.
If convicted on all counts, Kevin Bastian faces up to life in prison and Randee Bastian could spend 12 years in prison.
