GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Examiner.com’s BeerCity USA poll  — which Grand Rapids has won for two consecutive years — will not take place this year.

Charlie Papazian, a homebrewer who writes from Examiner.com and ran the contest between 2009 and 2013, said in a Tuesday column that BeerCity USA has “served its purpose” and that he is retiring the poll.

Grand Rapids tied with Ashville, NC for the title in 2012 and won it outright in 2013.

Papazian said the contest served to show that craft brewing in the U.S. is a “Main Street, grass roots, community support” industry.

He said 156,000 votes were cast over the poll’s five years.

The five BeerCity USA winners, according to Papazian:

  • 2009: Tie between Portland, Oregon and Asheville, North Carolina
  • 2010: Asheville
  • 2011: Asheville
  • 2012: Tie between Asheville and Grand Rapids
  • 2013: Grand Rapids
