HASTINGS, Mich. (WOOD) – 24 Hour News 8 has learned why the FBI recently raided the Barry County Sheriff’s Department.

On Wednesday morning, four FBI cars were parked outside the Barry County Sheriff’s Office in Hastings as the federal agency executed a search warrant.

Several federal agents were seen inside the building. The agents tried to stay out of 24 Hour News 8′s camera range as they worked.

On Friday, the FBI told 24 Hour News 8 it was assisting another agency when it executed a search warrant at the sheriff’s department Wednesday.

The agency that the FBI was helping out was the Office of Inspector General, which is within the Department of Justice.

That narrows down what this investigation is about because the O.I.G.’s mission is to uncover waste, fraud, abuse and misconduct in Department of Justice programs and personnel.

Sheriff Dar Leaf spoke to 24 Hour News 8 Wednesday evening about the FBI raid:

“We’re working with the U.S. Attorney’s Office on an old case. The sheriff’s office is OK, I’m OK, the undersheriff is OK,” Leaf said. “We’re OK. We’re working with them (the FBI) on an investigation.”

Leaf would not provide any other details Wednesday, but when asked whether anything illegal was happening within his department, he replied, “No.”
