GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A Grand Rapids real estate developer has been sentenced for embezzling tens of thousands of dollars in a chase that dates back to 2007.

John Raymond Barnes was sentenced last week to 42 months probation. He must also pay $66,000 in restitution.

The complaint stems from a 2007 real estate investment deal in Ionia. As a managing partner, Barnes began using rental proceeds from the commercial property to pay for non-related business and personal expenses for his “extravagant lifestyle,” Michigan State Police say.

Investigators say Barnes embezzled nearly $100,000 between 2007 and 2009, when MSP started investigating.

Barnes was arrested by state police in November.
