LAKELAND, Fla. (WOOD) – Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander has been named the team’s Opening Day starter, the Detroit Free Press reports.

This will be seventh consecutive time he has started the team’s first game.

He has been recovering from core-muscle surgery in January.

Verlander gets the nod over reigning American League Cy Young winner Max Scherzer.
