Man changing semi tire pinned, killed

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A Wyoming man died after becoming pinned underneath a semi-truck Monday.

Steven Unger, 38, was changing a tire of semi-truck at a business on Kraft Avenue Monday around when he became pinned under the vehicle.

Emergency responders were able to free him, but the man later died at the hospital.

Unger’s mother Susan Mansel told 24 Hour News 8 Thursday that he had worked for Meekhof Tire for about seven years, where he changed tires on large trucks. She said he had worked a full day Monday and was called to the Kraft Avenue scene after his shift.

The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating. Authorities are not releasing his name pending the outcome of MIOSHA’s investigation.

Requests for comment from Meekhof Tire and MIOSHA were not returned Thursday.
