ALLENDALE, Mich. (WOOD) — A Grand Valley State University professor who championed LGBT rights has died after a long battle with cancer.

Milton Ford died Wednesday at the age of 72.

Ford, a professor of liberal studies, was the founding director of the university’s LGBT Resource Center.

“Milt cared deeply for each student, and his celebration of students’ identities was liberating for him,” LGBT Resource Center Director Colette Beighley said in a statement.

He also led the effort to make LGBT studies part of the university’s curriculum when it adopted a minor program last year.

Ford celebrated his 40-year service award in December.

“He never rested on his laurels, and never allowed what had been his experience to limit his capacity for discovery,” Chair of Liberal Studies Wendy Burns-Ardolino said in a statement.
