LANSING, Mich. (AP) — State police say there were more deaths on Michigan roadways a year ago.

The agency said Friday the number of fatalities increased 2 percent from 936 in 2012 to 951 in 2013.

According to Michigan State Police Director Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue, the jump in traffic deaths was fueled in part by an upswing in fatalities involving large trucks, bicyclists, pedestrians and impaired driving.

Although traffic deaths in Michigan are rising, the number of crashes is decreasing.

The state has experienced significant drops in traffic crashes over the past decade, from 391,486 in 2003 to 289,061 last year.
