Man who threatened mall not guilty by insanity

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — A man who threatened a Portage mall and Kalamazoo apartment complex last year has been found not guilty by reason of insanity.

Monday, 23-year-old Mitchell Meister was remanded to the Michigan Center for Forensic Psychiatry for evaluation.

On July 12, 2013, one of Meister’s parents called police, saying his son had said he was going to “shoot up” Crossroads Mall in Portage. Meister then placed multiple calls to 911, saying that people were dead and that he was going to a Kalamazoo apartment complex with a gun next.

Neither of those things appear to have been true — no one was hurt at either location.

Meister was arrested later that evening in Portage. He was charged with unauthorized 911 use and resisting and obstructing a police officer.
