IONIA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — The Ionia County Sheriff’s Department is awaiting toxicology results to figure out what caused the death of a 2-year-old boy.

The boy collapsed at his home in the 4600 block of E. Riverside Drive in Ionia Township around 4:40 p.m. Thursday, sheriff’s officials said.

After he collapsed, the boy’s grandparents performed CPR, according to the sheriff’s department. Emergency crews also tried unsuccessfully to revive the boy, and he was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

An autopsy was performed on the boy, and his death is not being considered suspicious, foul play is not suspected and there were no obvious signs of trauma, sheriff’s officials said.

The investigation into the boy’s death will remain open until the toxicology report is completed.
