GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Michigan State Police continue to investigate a crash on eastbound I-96 Saturday morning that killed a Lowell woman.
Authorities told 24 Hour News 8 that it happened just before 3 a.m. near the Beltline in Grand Rapids. Michigan State Police closed down one lane to investigate what happened.
Michigan State Police say Melissa Ann Smith, a 42-year-old driver from Lowell, was driving a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am at a high speed when it side swiped a semi truck. The Grand Am went off the road, hit a guard rail and overturned several times.
The driver of the Grand Am was pronounced dead at the scene; she was the only person in the car. The semi truck driver was not hurt.
Authorities say excessive speed and alcohol were factors in this deadly accident.
