Michigan State Police say Melissa Ann Smith, a 42-year-old driver from Lowell, was driving a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am at a high speed when it side swiped a semi truck. The Grand Am went off the road, hit a guard rail and overturned several times.

The driver of the Grand Am was pronounced dead at the scene; she was the only person in the car. The semi truck driver was not hurt.

Authorities say excessive speed and alcohol were factors in this deadly accident.
