Kentwood Arch Program Connecting with Community Awards Finalist 2014

Improving academic performances, engaging students, families and community is the focus of this week’s Connecting with Community Award finalist.

Eva Aguirre Cooper visited a Kentwood Public Middle School to learn more about the Kentwood ARCH Program the second of the 2014 Connecting with Community Awards Finalists.

The Kentwood ARCH Program is a partnership between the Kentwood Public Schools, the City of Kentwood Parks and Recreation Department and numerous community partners.

ARCH stands for academic enrichment, recreation and arts, community and family services and healthy lifestyles.

The partnership was formed to focus on the needs of at-risk students and families. The target is low income families, families of color, special education students and English language learners.

600 students are included in this after school program for three hours Monday through Thursday. Each day includes one hour of academic instruction and homework help. There is one hour of physical activates and health education and then an one of enrichment activities.

ARCH brings in outside community partners to help mentor and share experiences with the students.
