BERRIEN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A 19-year-old female is dead and a 20-year-old man has been arrested after a pickup truck crashed into a tree early Tuesday morning.

Around 1:50 a.m., Berrien County Sheriff deputies were called out to an accident near the intersection of Pucker St. and Smith Rd. in Berrien Township.

When they arrived on scene, they found a damaged ’78 pickup truck and a 19-year-old passenger in the truck. The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.

Moments later, deputies found a 20-year-old male wandering around the area. Deputies say the man had visible injuries on his body. Authorities determined the 20-year-old was the driver of the pickup truck.

It appears the pickup went off the road and crashed into a tree. Berrien County Sheriff deputies believe speed and alcohol were contributing factors in the crash.

The man was taken to a St. Joseph hospital for non-life threatening injuries. He was also placed under arrest and is facing a charge of Operating a Motor Vehicle Under the Influence of Intoxicants causing Death.

The name of the victim and the driver have not been released.
