PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Tuesday marks the home opener for the West Michigan Whitecaps’ 2014 season, and Fifth Third Ballpark looks a lot different than it did several months ago after a devastating fire.
On Jan. 3, 2014, the fire, which is believed to have been sparked by a space heater in a skybox suite along the first-base line, gutted much of the southeast side of the park, and damaged some of the third-base side as well.

Yet construction crews worked through one of the harshest winters on the books in West Michigan to reconstruct the ballpark, and just as Whitecaps officials said in January, the park will be ready for opening day.
