BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) – A man in Battle Creek is in custody after police said he stole a city-owned vehicle and drove it while drunk.

The vehicle was reported as stolen around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Fountain St. and Capital Ave. by its driver, who had walked away from the vehicle to check on a construction project and later found it missing, according to the Battle Creek Police Department.

While the driver was talking to the officers who responded to the call, someone else called 911 to report a city vehicle that was being driven erratically about two miles away in the area of W. Columbia Ave. and S. LaVista Blvd., police said in a news release.

The person who spotted the stolen vehicle kept it in sight until officers were able to pull the driver over, police said.

The male driver, whose name was not released, was arrested on drunk driving and auto theft charges, as well as outstanding warrants.
