GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A semi-truck rolled over Tuesday after colliding with a passenger vehicle, causing a traffic backup on the East Beltline.
The crash happened around 3 p.m. Northbound lanes of the East Beltline were closed at Cascade Road SE until around 7:30 p.m., according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.
One image from the scene showed a semi-trailer on its side, and the cab jacked into the air. Another showed a passenger vehicle with damage to the front and rear ends.
The semi is from Advance Packaging Corp. in Grand Rapids. Its driver told 24 Hour News 8 he was headed north on the Beltline when a passenger vehicle headed east on Cascade ran a red light at the intersection.
The semi driver swerved to avoid hitting the other vehicle directly. Despite hiss efforts, the vehicles collided. The crash, combined with the momentum of the swerve, caused the semi to tip onto its side.
Michigan State Police on the scene say the teen driver of the passenger vehicle was distracted. The teen told police he had been looking at his radio controls.
Neither the semi-truck driver nor the teen driver were hurt.
