NBA D-League team coming to GR

WALKER, Mich. (WOOD) –- New information about an NBA Development League team that’s relocating to Grand Rapids has been released, including details about its affiliation with the Detroit Pistons.

An announcement was made Tuesday afternoon at the DeltaPlex in Walker about the yet-to-be-named team, which is coming to West Michigan from Springfield, Mass., where it was known as the Springfield Armor.

While the team will be owned locally by SSJ Group – which will manage the team’s day-to-day operations and community involvement – the Pistons’ management will oversee the team’s personnel and basketball-related aspects, according to a news release.

Home games will be played at the DeltaPlex for the season, which runs from November to April, the release said. In addition, up to six D-League playoff games may be played there.

More than 30 percent of current NBA players, including three who play for the Pistons, participated in the NBA D-League at some point in their careers, the release said. There are currently 18 teams in the league.
