EVERGREEN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Three people are recovering after a man’s boat flipped over in a Montcalm County lake and two others tried to rescue him when their boat also overturned.
The 61-year-old man from Crystal was in his 12-foot aluminum boat on the east side of Loon Lake when his boat flipped more than 100 yards away from the shore. The incident happened around 4:45 p.m. Wednesday.
According to the Montcalm County Sheriff’s Department, a neighbor woman saw the man in the water and called 911.
The woman, along with her female neighbor, then attempted to rescue the man by using a paddle boat. However, their boat also overturned before they could reach him.
A dive team was called in, along with the Crystal Township Fire Department. They were able to reach the three people in the water and bring them to safety.
The man was taken to Carson City Hospital where he was treated and released the same day.
Authorities believe the man was in the water for at least a half hour before he was rescued. Life jackets were not worn by any of the people involved.
