COMSTOCK TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — One person has died after making a U-turn in front of a volunteer firefighter who was on his way to another crash in the same area Thursday morning.
Two vehicles were involved in the first crash which happened around 8:30 a.m. Thursday at N. Sprinkle Road and East Main in Comstock Charter Township.
Both drivers were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
A short time later, a volunteer firefighter for Comstock Charter Township Fire Department was responding to the crash in his personal vehicle when he encountered a traffic back-up on Sprinkle Road between Michigan Avenue and Main Street due to the earlier crash. Authorities said he had his lights and siren on while driving.
The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Department tells 24 Hour News 8 that the firefighter was responding appropriately going to the left of traffic when a vehicle made a U-turn in front of him and the two collided.
The driver of the vehicle, 51-year-old Audrey Kurka from Kalamazoo, died on scene. The firefighter was not hurt, but was taken to a hospital to get checked out.
