EAST LANSING, Mich. (WOOD) — A celebration is happening Thursday for the life of an 8-year-old girl who stole the hearts of the Michigan State University basketball team and the nation.

Lacey Holsworth, also known as “Princess Lacey”, lost her battle with cancer last week. She died just days after a judging a slam dunk contest in Texas with her hero and friend, MSU basketball star Adreian Payne.

“Princess Lacey” first met Payne two years ago when the Michigan State University basketball team visited her in the hospital. She remained close with Payne and was often seen on the sidelines at MSU games.

A celebration of life event is being held Thursday night at the Breslin Center in East Lansing. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the celebration starts at 6:30 p.m. Parking is free.

Lacey’s family has asked that those attending wear bright colors, and instead of bringing flowers, they want attendees to donate to charity in her honor.
