GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Much of West Michigan was at high risk for fires Sunday.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources Fire Risk Map showed the risk was ‘high’ or ‘very high’ in many areas. There were no areas of ‘extreme’ risk — the category indicating the most danger.

24 Hour News 8 heard multiple reports of brush, garage and house fires Sunday, though there were no reports of injuries.

Storm Team 8 says the combination of very dry air, breezy winds, warmth and sunshine contributed to the problem, making it more likely for dry, dead vegetation to catch fire.

Above, Storm Team 8 meteorologist Kyle Underwood explains when the risk will start to decrease.
