COLUMBUS, Ind. (WOOD) — Authorities have recovered the body of a Kalamazoo man whose kayak capsized earlier this month in an Indiana river.

A passerby spotted the body of 27-year-old Enrique Quinonez in the Flatrock River around 2:30 p.m. Monday, according to a release from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Crews retrieved the body from under a large tree submerged in about four feet of water, about 150 yards from where Quinonez’s kayak capsized 15 days ago.

His body was taken to a local hospital. His family was notified and soon arrived at the hospital, the DNR said.

Quinonez went under the water after his kayak capsized in Columbus, Ind. on April 6. Quinonez was not wearing a life jacket and did not know how to swim, authorities said.

The Indiana DNR and Bartholomew County Water Rescue had been searching as far as a mile downriver since the incident, WOOD TV8′s Indianapolis sister station WISH reports. They say that search was made more difficult by heavy rains that caused the water level to rise.
